BITS AND PIECES ABOUT PRAYER
by Matt Leach

Read Genesis 3:8-15; Ephesians 1; John 3:16

 I

You might draw the conclusion at this point in the story that God is extremely angry. He was angry at the serpent, that’s for sure. But other scriptures suggest that it was with great heaviness of heart, and with great love that he spoke to the man and woman and told them what the consequences of their actions were. John 3:16 tells us how great is God’s love for us. Ephesians chapter one tells how God laid down His plan to redeem us before the beginning of time.

The unrecorded part of God’s conversation with Adam might have included these words: "Adam, I cannot break my own law. Because of your sin I must put you out of the Garden. I have no other choice. It’s the law."

"I know God. If you were to do anything else you would not be God."

"Adam, My heart breaks knowing what you and the generations following you must suffer. But be of good cheer. I have provided a way out and in the fullness of time all will be restored – at great cost to me. Because I love you so much I will ultimately bear the full brunt of your punishment on myself."

"But Father. It will be so hard being out there, without You. I can no longer look into your eyes, or see your face, or know the fragrance of your love."

"Adam, know that even though you cannot see me face to face, I am with you. I will never forsake you. There is no place where you can go where I am not already there (Psalm 139). We will continue to talk, you and I and your descendants. A time will come when they do not know me and do not talk to me. But to all who call upon me I will answer (Ps 91:15; Isaiah 65:24; Jeremiah 33:3)

Sin caused a rift between God and man. It did not stop God and man from having conversations. In the story of Cain and Able (Genesis 4:1-16) we learn that Cain knew God and knew God’s character. When God explained to Cain what had to happen because of his sin, Cain cried out that it was more than he could bear. It was the cry of a man who knew he must pay for his sin, but that if he asked God to help him, God would, God’s heart is a heart of love.

Enoch walked with God (Genesis 5:21-24). They walked and a talked together. If you are having a heart to heart talk with someone it means to know that person’s heart. Adam, Cain and Enoch knew God’s heart. You can know God’s heart, too, and have conversations with Him. Start with a little pocket notebook you carry with you, and write down the verses that tell you God’s Heart. Ps 139:2 "Thou knowest my downsitting and mine uprising, thou understandest my thought afar off." Talk with Him, and listen.
